Report urges Kenya to ban plastic bags

Wednesday, March 9, 2005File:Plastic bag stock sized.jpg

They are cheap, useful, and very plentiful, and that is exactly the problem, according to researchers. A report issued on Feb. 23 by a cadre of environment and economics researchers suggested that Kenya should ban the common plastic bag that one gets at the checkout counter of grocery stores, and place a levy on other plastic bags, all to combat the country’s environmental problems stemming from the bags’ popularity.

Using Praise And A Positive Attitude To Train Your Dog

Submitted by: Randy Jones

Praise is the power in the training of your dog. In training, it is to be applied in liberal doses, at any and all opportunities. It is used when the dog does something right, and when he does something wrong. Don t fall into the easy solution of giving him tidbits or snacks as rewards for his performance. The food will work, but eventually it will have to stop and then you ve got a problem.

Praise when he does right needs little explanation. When he is first learning, give him praise when he has done something, even if you have had to guide, shove and haul him into it every step of the way. All the work in the beginning stages may have been yours but praise him as though he d done something colossal. When he gets an idea of what you want and tries it experimentally, praise him to the skies.

Praise him with your voice, telling him Good Boy! and Good Dog! and even Well done. This is one case where there is no reason to stick to a single word or phrase the tone of your voice will tell him all he wants to know. And praise him with your hands. Pat him, stroke him, fondle him, and scratch him. But let him have your touch as a reward and assurance that all is well.

Praising him when he has done something wrong may be a bit harder to understand, but it is perhaps more essential than praise for good work. It follows a good constructive correction first to straighten out whatever he has or hasn t done. Then use praise to take his mind off the fact that is was you who did the correcting. The correction must always in the dog s mind be a natural outgrowth of the wrong,, or of the failure to perform whatever is wanted.

When you correct him, come in immediately with praise; it lets him know that you are still on his side, still love him, and that all is well in the world. Correction, done fairly and firmly, will earn you his undying respect, if followed by praise and unaccompanied by any display of displeasure or lack of affection. Take this as another firm and basic rule of training always praise after correction.

Play is important in training too. While he will probably never think of it as an actual reward, the play will establish completely friendly relations between you. While the training period should be kept businesslike, the play puts things back on the right footing he will forget about the corrections, but the lessons will still be there.

Fifteen killed by US drone strikes in Northern Waziristan

Monday, January 3, 2011

Pakistani officials have stated that three US drone strikes have killed fifteen people in the country Saturday. The attacks occurred to the north of Miranshah town in the North Waziristan region.

Security officials in the town informed AFP that in the first strike, US drones fired four missiles on a car, killing seven suspected militants. A nearby “militant compound” was also destroyed by the missiles. “Three militants were killed in the car while four were killed in the house,” the official said. The second attack occurred within minutes of the first, and four militants, who were carrying on rescue work were killed by the two missiles that had been fired.

Intelligence officials believe that the militants were associated with Hafiz Gul Bahadur. “We are trying to establish identity of the militants but most of them are believed to be fighters of Hafiz Gul Bahadur,” an official told the media. However, the death toll and the identity of those killed was not officially confirmed. A local official stated that they had heard reports stating “that four foreigners were also killed in these fresh attacks”. However, he added that their identity is “still not known” and mentioned that they “are collecting more information.”

Woman fined in Spain under new ‘Gag Law’

Monday, August 17, 2015

A woman in Spain has been fined €800 after posting a photograph to her Facebook account of a police vehicle parked in space reserved for disabled/handicapped drivers. She was located and fined within two days of posting the photograph. The incident has now gained international attention.

The woman, who has not been named, saw the police vehicle parked in a reserved spot in Petrer and snapped a photo. She posted the photo with the caption: “Park where you bloody well please and you won’t even be fined.” ((es))Spanish Language: ?Aparcas donde te sale de los cojones y encima no te multan…

Fernando Portillo, a local police spokesperson, told local media the vehicle was parked there because police were responding to an emergency. After the story was reported on a local news website, it began to be reported internationally.

On July 1, the “Citizens’ Security law” went into effect. The law was written in response to violent protests. Even before its enactment it saw widespread criticism. It was dubbed the “gag law” ((es))Spanish language: ?ley mordaza or the “gagging law”. The law prohibits “the unauthorized use of images of police officers that might jeopardize their or their family’s safety or that of protected facilities or police operations” ((es))Spanish language: ?El uso no autorizado de imágenes o datos personales o profesionales de autoridades o miembros de las Fuerzas y Cuerpos de Seguridad que pueda poner en peligro la seguridad personal o familiar de los agentes, de las instalaciones protegidas o en riesgo el éxito de una operación.

Judge Joaquim Bosch, Judges for Democracy spokesperson, said: “It is not a law for citizens’ security, but a law for the government to avoid citizens’ protests. All opinion polls indicate that the Spanish society is not at all preoccupied by security but by the economic situation and political corruption.”

Amnesty International condemned the law in a report: “With threats of fines or threats of being beaten, the government is trying to stigmatize and criminalize people who are just practicing their rights.” Virginia Álvarez, who wrote the report, noted, “instead of listening to their demands, instead of starting a dialogue, authorities are doing everything they can to impede people from protesting”.

The part of the law which prohibits “the unauthorized use of images of police officers that might jeopardize their or their family’s safety” is cited as the reason for the fine, however, police spokesperson Fernando Portillo said it was up to police officers involved and under the new law they could do this. “We would have preferred a different solution but they have the legal right to impose the fine,” Portillo said, but the public posting of the photo impugned the officers’ sense of honor.

Lobby groups oppose plans for EU copyright extension

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

The European Commission currently has proposals on the table to extend performers’ copyright terms. Described by Professor Martin Kretschmer as the “Beatles Extension Act”, the proposed measure would extend copyright from 50 to 95 years after recording. A vast number of classical tracks are at stake; the copyright on recordings from the fifties and early sixties is nearing its expiration date, after which it would normally enter the public domain or become ‘public property’. E.U. Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services Charlie McCreevy is proposing this extension, and if the other relevant Directorate Generales (Information Society, Consumers, Culture, Trade, Competition, etc.) agree with the proposal, it will be sent to the European Parliament.

Wikinews contacted Erik Josefsson, European Affairs Coordinator for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (E.F.F.), who invited us to Brussels, the heart of E.U. policy making, to discuss this new proposal and its implications. Expecting an office interview, we arrived to discover that the event was a party and meetup conveniently coinciding with FOSDEM 2008 (the Free and Open source Software Developers’ European Meeting). The meetup was in a sprawling city centre apartment festooned with E.F.F. flags and looked to be a party that would go on into the early hours of the morning with copious food and drink on tap. As more people showed up for the event it turned out that it was a truly international crowd, with guests from all over Europe.

Eddan Katz, the new International Affairs Director of the E.F.F., had come over from the U.S. to connect to the European E.F.F. network, and he gladly took part in our interview. Eddan Katz explained that the Electronic Frontier Foundation is “A non-profit organisation working to protect civil liberties and freedoms online. The E.F.F. has fought for information privacy rights online, in relation to both the government and companies who, with insufficient transparency, collect, aggregate and make abuse of information about individuals.” Another major focus of their advocacy is intellectual property, said Eddan: “The E.F.F. represents what would be the public interest, those parts of society that don’t have a concentration of power, that the private interests do have in terms of lobbying.”

Becky Hogge, Executive Director of the U.K.’s Open Rights Group (O.R.G.), joined our discussion as well. “The goals of the Open Rights Group are very simple: we speak up whenever we see civil, consumer or human rights being affected by the poor implementation or the poor regulation of new technologies,” Becky summarised. “In that sense, people call us -I mean the E.F.F. has been around, in internet years, since the beginning of time- but the Open Rights Group is often called the British E.F.F.

Designed and created by the Companys factory in Java, Indonesia, the furniture is complemented by exquisite handicrafts and homewares, intricate glass art, antiques, rugs, beautiful themed lamps, stone carvings, and a wide selection of original paintings created by local and expatriate residents of Bali.

Lio Collection offers a complete bespoke service, including design concept, furniture, decorative items, and even clothing and corporate identity, for hotels, restaurants, commercial venues and private residences. The internationally branded company is headquartered on the tropical paradise island of Bali, Indonesia, with 13 gallery showrooms conveniently located within the Kerobokan, Seminyak, Oberoi, Jimbaran, Tuban, Ubud and Ngurah Rai By Pass districts. There is also an outlet in Medan on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, as well as representation overseas with family owned and franchised enterprises in Denmark, Germany, Australia, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Mauritius, and the USA, and others anticipated in Iran and Dubai.

One of our best selling lines at Lio Collection is our teakwood garden furniture, designed for alfresco living. Teakwood is non-porous and therefore suitable for outdoor use as it can withstand rain. Premium Indonesian teak wood is extremely durable; its high oil content makes it naturally sturdy, and its low coefficient of radial and tangential expansion means that it is less likely to twist, swell, warp or crack under adverse climatic conditions.

The olio resin gives a distinctive odour to the freshly cut wood. Typically golden brown in colour, the texture is uneven and the grain is usually straight. Plantation wood is superior as it is grown for the specific purpose of production. The trees are planted closely, forcing them to grow tall and straight and without too many branches, which makes them ideal for furniture. The grain comes to life with the application of oil, and at Lio Collection we present a choice of finishes. Our practical range of garden furniture is fashioned from solid teak wood, and sometimes mixed with stainless steel. It is designed for terraces, pool decks, and semi-covered areas such as verandahs. The style is modern, relaxed and tropical.

A particularly special piece in our garden furniture collection is the Elverdissen dining table. Its classic design features sleek sophisticated corners of stainless steel, which gleam and merge with solid teakwood. Contemporary and modernist in appearance, this table is of exceptional quality, sourced by a designer with a comprehensive knowledge of timbers and techniques.

With his philosophy of Customer Satisfaction is always Number One! Christos V Liokouras has passionately pursued his vision of expanding his furniture domain and became known to customers, manufacturers, importers and exporters alike in the European region as the Rattan and Bamboo king.

Why Web Designers Are Switching To Website Builders!

Submitted by: Petersf Moore

Making a lasting impression on the internet is becoming more and more challenging because of the increasing number of websites out there. Website designers and marketers need all the time and money they can spare to concentrate on generating sales and income quickly and so more and more of them are switching over to website builders and creators.

Website builders are the perfect solution for creating big-impression websites and landing pages because they allow you to have an online presence literally within moments, depending on the package.

Rather than being restrictive, web creators are evolving to become more and more feature-rich and are the perfect way to build fantastic, professional looking sites with less hassle.

Some of the benefits

You are using pre-loaded templates which you can then enhance in your own time, saving you a great deal of the thought process but, very importantly, still allowing you the freedom to personalise them to your customer’s liking. With a website builder package, you will have access to technical support around the clock. The number of included add-ons available from these packages is growing every day and they can make your websites look more attractive whilst easier for your customers to use – let’s face it, the customer just wants something that looks great and is hassle-free.

Because they are web-based packages, you can access your websites from anywhere around the world as long as you are online. Web builders also give your customers access to statistical information which means that they can keep in touch with how well their business is performing and use the information to target niche markets. You can now also get full HTML access but with automated search engine optimisation (SEO) built in; again saving you time and effort. You can easily upload and store your own written documents, images and content to web builders with large amounts of storage space.

The alternatives

The alternatives to web builders, such as Dreamweaver, can be ridiculously expensive, time consuming and mean that you are tied in to one particular package when designing a web for your customer. What happens when that package is superseded by a better product and you have to re-train to familiarise yourself all over again? They take up enormous amounts of your time and can be rather frustrating to say the least.

Leave yourself with more time to make more money!

Website creators are, therefore, the most affordable, trouble-free method of getting online, promoting businesses and still allow you the freedom to be who you want to be and put your own personal stamp on them. You will be able to generate far more websites for your customers in a shorter space of time with increased levels of success, meaning that you can deliver a consistently high-standard of work and generate more income for yourself.

It’s all about becoming more and more efficient in a shorter space of time to stay ahead of the game. Once you have found and used a website creator, you will wonder what you did without one and find new ways to spend your time making even more money!

Calls for bottled water bans grow in Canada

Saturday, August 23, 2008

London, Ontario is the latest in a string of Canadian cities to have acted on increasing public demand to ban bottled water. On Monday, the decision to eliminate bottled water sales in city-run facilities was passed by London’s city council with a vote of 15-3 in favour. The move was driven by a desire to reduce waste and shipping, have a lower impact on the environment and promote tap water as a cheap and safe alternative.

London’s new restrictions will be implemented over the next several months in buildings that are already equipped with water fountains. Bottled water will still be permitted at many city-run events, such as upcoming summer festivals. Privately-owned retailers will not be affected by the ban.

Other cities, such as Vancouver, Ottawa and Kitchener, that are already engaged in debate on the issue, may now be watching London carefully for how the ban plays out. Other areas have already begun to phone London with questions on the details of its new regulations. Toronto has begun taking a look at bottled water packaging as part of its waste diversion strategy, and its public school board is looking into the possibility of a total restriction on bottled water sales.

In recent years, an awareness of the energy that is required to manufacture, transport and recycle the product has spread nation-wide. Proponents of the ban point to the fact that it can produce as much as 150 times the volume of greenhouse gas when producing bottled water as compared to supplying the same volume of tap water. They also point out that the water that goes into bottled water products is not inspected as frequently as tap water in Canadian cities.

Some have taken this cause to heart more than others, such as British Environment Minister Phil Woolas, who called the use of bottled water “morally unacceptable.” Restaurant critic Giles Coren of The Times of London criticizes those who use the product as “the new smokers.”

Canada’s beverage industry has come down with criticism on the increasing opposition to bottled water. Spokesman Scott Tabachnick for Coca-Cola Co., which produces Dasani brand bottled water, commented on the convenience of the product: “It’s hard to bring your kitchen sink with you.”

It’s hard to bring your kitchen sink with you.

Vancouver City Councillor Tim Stevenson thinks that bottled water’s time has come and gone: “Bottled water companies have had a fabulous ride on an unnecessary fad.” Vancouver officials are still determining how bottled water restrictions, which have been voted for by the City Council, can be phased in.

Next month, the city is planning to initiate a marketing campaign encouraging Vancouver residents to choose tap water and to remember to carry reusable drinking containers whenever possible.

Renowned environmental activist Dr. David Suzuki has praised London’s decision, saying that it represents a turning point for people’s perceptions on the issue: “I’m really delighted that London has done this because it really makes us focus on some fundamental issues.” He hopes that someday people will “look at anyone who hauls out a bottle of water and say, ‘What the hell’s wrong with you?'”

UK PM’s speechwriter awaits sentence

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

An English lawyer has pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. He faked a legal judgment and sent it to a father who was pleading in Taunton family court to be able to remain involved in his child’s upbringing. The lawyer, London barrister Bruce Hyman, now awaits his sentence. The judge indicated that he could receive a prison sentence. Bruce Hyman is well-known in media circles, having produced The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on BBC Radio. He also produced a series with Clive Anderson, at Above the Title Productions, called Unreliable Evidence.

The father, a former City financier, had attended a series of court hearings in order to make suitable arrangements to see his child following an acrimonious divorce. Shortly before one of these hearings he received an email, ostensibly from a self-help group to which he belonged, which had attached a Court of Appeal case that appeared favourable to an application he had made for the judge to stand down from the case. The father, who was representing himself, duly showed the case to the judge. At this point, Bruce Hyman, the lawyer representing the former wife, claimed to the judge that the case was a forgery, which indeed it turned out to be.

After confirming that the self-help group had not sent him the email, the father then embarked on some detective work his own. The fraudulent email was traced via its header to a dial-up internet connection and a phone number belonging to a shop in London. The shop was able to recover CCTV footage which showed a man sending the email from an Apple laptop. The man turned out to be Bruce Hyman.

Sentencing of Hyman is due in Bristol Crown Court on the 19th of September.
