Cars big winner as 34th Annual Annie Awards handed out

Monday, February 12, 2007

Cars drove home the big prize last night, from the 34th Annual Annie Awards. The animation industry’s highest honor, ASIFA-Hollywood’s Annies recognise contributions to animation, writing, directing, storyboarding, voice acting, composing, and much more.

As mentioned, Pixar took home the big prize last night, after facing stiff competition from four other Happy Feet, Monster House, Open Season, and Over the Hedge.

But the biggest winner of the night didn’t get a “Best Animated Feature” nod at all. Flushed Away won five feature animation categories including Animated Effects (Scott Cegielski), Character Animation (Gabe Hordos), Production Design (Pierre-Olivier Vincent), Voice Acting (Sir Ian McKellan as Toad), Writing (Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan, and Will Davies).

Over The Hedge won awards for Directing (Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick), Storyboarding (Gary Graham), and Character Design (Nicolas Marlet).

Of little surprise, Randy Newman won an Annie for Cars in the “Music in an Animated Feature Production” category. Newman has won many Oscars for his movie music, and has a nomination this year for the song “Our Town“. Newman didn’t attend the Annies, instead picking up a Grammy for “Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media”.

DisneyToon Studios’ Bambi II won “Best Home Entertainment Production”, while “Best Animated Short Subject” went to Blue Sky Studios’ No Time For Nuts, which is based on Ice Age.

“Best Animated Video Game” went to Flushed Away The Game, while a United Airlines ad named “Dragon” won a “Best Animated Television Commercial” Annie for DUCK Studios.

Wikileaks release Afghan ‘war logs’ in co-operation with mainstream media

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

WikiLeaks has released a mass of “secret” material from the United States’ involvement in Afghanistan in the five years from 2004 to 2009.

The material was scrutinised in co-operation with the main stream newspapers The Guardian and The New York Times, and the German magazine Der Spiegel, who cross-referenced the leaked documents with published material to check the veracity of the material.

The material makes explicit the accusation that the Taliban is receiving support including man portable anti-aircraft missiles from Iran, and Pakistan. However, despite being condemned by the authorities in the United States, commentators have said that nothing in the released material would come as a surprise to anyone who has been following the war.

An interview with gossip columnist Michael Musto on the art of celebrity journalism

Sunday, October 7, 2007

There are two things one can expect on a trip to see Michael Musto at the offices of the Village Voice: a 20-minute round-trip wait for the elevator and rapid fire answers from one of the most recognizable gossip columnists in the United States. Musto, in addition to his appearances on Countdown with Keith Olbermann and the E! network, has been writing his column for the Voice since 1984. He has recently compiled the best of them in a book released this year titled, La Dolce Musto: Writings by the World’s Most Outrageous Columnist. He was Carrie Bradshaw, replete with a prodigious use of puns, before Sex in the City was a thought. His column is a romp through his life, spats and opinions on socio-political issues. As David Thigpen of the Chicago Tribune wrote, Musto is “a funny and caustic satirist who masquerades as a gossip and nightlife columnist.”

Musto, a Columbia University graduate, is a rarity in today’s celebrity world: he is accessible. He often corresponds with his readers and his public functions are a mix of parties, nightclubs, academic lectures, university panels and film premieres.

He is friendly and frank, and he welcomes people to join him in his world (“I just got a message that Michael Lucas died!” he says staring wide-eyed at his phone; the message turned out to be false). Wikinews reporter David Shankbone spoke with Musto about his life and his relationship to the world of celebrity journalism. And he did not hold back.

Tips On How To Use Old Wrought Iron Gates And Railing In Different Ways

By Danica Reynes

There are many ways you can reuse those old wrought iron railings or gates, such as hanging pictures on them, using them as headboards, making decorative pot racks out of them, or installing them in your garden as borders or trellises.

There is an elegance and charm associated with wrought iron, whether it is used for a railing, post or gate. If you have Los Angeles iron works and wrought iron pieces that have outlived their usefulness or you discovered some in salvage yards and thrift stores, there are many design ideas which you can follow in order to reuse these items, including.

Use as a headboard to decorate bedrooms

You can hang a piece of your wrought iron railing behind your bed for a charming headboard that be a great accent piece to break the monotony of walls and complement the room’s design schemes. Accentuate any room by using dark metal wrought iron pieces in red, green, and gold color schemes. Enhancing a comfortable cottage-themed room with the stylish and well-worn look of a weathered, white ironwork headboard will make the room more delightful. Painting your wrought iron piece white and sanding off portions to produce a slightly worn look will achieve the shabby chic effect so popular today.

Snaps can be dangle on it

Wrought iron piece can be used as a back ground on your wall or as a base for setting up framed photographs there. Hang the wrought iron section in such a way that its bars are running horizontally and then use hooks to attach the photographs on the horizontal bars. For a fun look, randomly arrange pictures and frames on your wall.

Install a piece on the ceiling as a decorative pot rack

A wrought iron piece can be used for decoration and also be functional. As a rack for pots, a home cook can use them in the kitchen. A wrought iron gate can become a decorative and functional accessory; when mounted to your kitchen ceiling for example it can be used to display kitchen utensils. One option is to paint the pot rack to coordinate with the rest of the room, or you may decide to maintain the original rustic look by leaving it alone.

You can fit it in the garden as a border or as a supporting system

A garden with a deep green grass can be perfect for the use of wrought iron pieces where they will stand out. You can use an old wrought iron gate or a piece of wrought iron railing as a support beam for vines to climb up as they grow. Embed the wrought iron deep enough in the ground so that it does not collapse later. Wrought iron railing sections may serve to surround your garden plot. Not only will these beautiful wrought iron pieces serve as wonderful decor that will surely spruce up the landscape, they’ll also protect your flower beds from pets, children and any other unwelcome guests. You don’t need to be concerned if the wrought iron pieces used are not all in the same condition and are of different sizes, because this will provide an unconventional twist.

The great thing about wrought iron pieces is that they have a unique beauty and charm that allows you to use and reuse them in a nearly infinite variety of ways.

Ford’s US auto sales spike, surpassing GM

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Ford Motor Company said on Tuesday that its sales in the United States rose 43% in February compared to the same period last year, as the automaker outsold rivals Toyota and General Motors.

The strength of our new products … are resonating with customers

Ford said that total sales improved to 142,285 units, compared to 141,951 units sold by GM. Additionally, Ford said that its share of the total US car market rose to 17%, up from 14% a year ago. The increase was better than analysts had predicted, and Ford’s stock rose to a five-year high in morning trading, before declining later in the day. Ford’s sales were significantly influenced by a 74% increase in fleet sales to businesses. Rental car agencies alone accounted for around 30,000 units sold. Sales to retail consumers increased only 28%.

The increases were led by sales of two sedans, the Fusion and Taurus, which rose 166.5 and 93.3% respectively, although sales of other models such as SUVs and pickup trucks also increased. Both models were significantly redesigned last year, and analysts said that improved quality from such cars were driving the increases.

Other companies also reported February sales today, nearly all reporting sales gains as well, although none as large as those of Ford. Toyota was the sole exception to the sales gains, as their sales declined 8.7%, as the company was faced with a global recall during the month that led to a temporary stoppage of production for some models.

“The strength of our new products … are resonating with customers,” said Ken Czubay, Ford’s vice president of sales and marketing. However, he believed that traditional Toyota customers were not buying rival autos, but rather awaiting the results from the recalls.

20 percent of Victorians drive on worn tyres

Wednesday, June 7, 2006

A survey released today by the RACV and Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce found that 20 percent of cars in Victoria have at least one worn or unroadworthy tyre.

The study looked at 1,000 cars last month and found of those 200 had at least one tyre that had worn.

Chief engineer for the RACV, Michael Case said that driving on worn tyres could increase the distance it takes a car to brake and road safety. “Increasing the braking distance can increase the chance of running into the car in front of you and having an unnecessary collision and if that collision is serious enough certainly it can cause injuries” said Mr Case.

It is widely accepted that tyres are one of the most important parts of a vehicle. As tyres are the only part of a vehicle in contact with the road, they affect acceleration, braking and cornering.

As well as the safety issues associated with driving a vehicle with a worn tyre, drivers can be fined for “driving an unsafe vehicle” and fined AUD$171, in addition police may “defect” the vehicle, restricting its use until repaired. Victorian law requires that tyres have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm.

Wikinews investigated the average price of each tyre on a typical large and small Australian sedan, and SUV and found the cost to be AUD$129, AUD$105, and AUD$191 respectively.

Truck bomb kills at least 80 in Afghan capital city center

Wednesday, May 31, 2017

In what Afghan president Ashraf Ghani called “a crime against humanity,” earlier this morning, local time, a septic tanker truck filled with explosives detonated not far from the German embassy in Kabul’s Wazir Akbar Khan area, during the city’s morning commute. According to the country’s health ministry, at least 83 bodies have been found and over 450 have been wounded. The ministry’s spokesperson, Ismail Kawasi, said most of the victims were civilians, including children.

It was a car bomb near the German embassy, but there are several other important compounds and offices near there too. It is hard to say what the exact target is

“The attack demonstrates a complete disregard for civilians and reveals the barbaric nature of the enemy faced by the Afghan people,” Ghani said in an official statement. “The terrorists, even in the holy month of Ramadan, the month of goodness, blessing and prayer, are not stopping the killing of our innocent people,” he said. General John W. Nicholson Jr., commander of American and North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces in Afghanistan congratulated city security forces for preventing the truck from coming any closer to important government buildings and embassies.

This attack was unusual, though not unheard of, because of the sheer volume of the bomb involved. According to Kabul’s police chief, General Hassan Shah Frogh, “The blast was so huge that it dug a big crater as deep as four meters” (13 feet) and it damaged buildings as far as one mile (1.2 km) away.

Though an initial report by Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish claimed the site of the detonation as near one of the gates to the Afghan Presidential Palace, it was actually closer to the German embassy, which sustained considerable damage, according to NBC. Germany currently has more than 950 soldiers in Afghanistan as part of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission and helped the Afghan security personnel in their training. “It was a car bomb near the German embassy, but there are several other important compounds and offices near there too. It is hard to say what the exact target is,” said police spokesperson Basir Mujahid.

The Taliban has denied any association with this attack. Western countries have been fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan for about 15 years, including the U.S., Germany, and Britain, but many of these countries withdrew much of their forces before 2015. Since then, the Taliban has come to control about 40% of Afghanistan, per U.S. estimates.

Fox News cuts ties with journalist Eric Bolling amid sexual misconduct claims; his son dies hours later

Monday, September 11, 2017

On Friday, Fox News announced they no longer employed journalist Eric Bolling, amid sexual misconduct claims against him. Hours later on Friday night, his son Eric Chase Bolling died at the age of 19.

Eric Bolling worked with Fox News for at least ten years and was one of the hosts of the television program Fox News Specialists.

In August, the network suspended Bolling, when a HuffPost journalist Yashar Ali reported that Bolling sent female colleagues lewd text messages. He filed a US$50-million lawsuit against Ali, alleging defamation. On Friday, Fox News announced Bolling had left. They are also cancelling Fox News Specialists.

Hours later, Bolling’s son and only child Eric Chase, a University of Colorado Boulder sophomore, died at the age of 19. A family friend said the boy would be autopsied as the cause of death is not yet determined. Fox News expressed their condolences as did other journalists, including CNN’s Don Lemon.

The late Roger Ailes, one of the channel founders, and another journalist Bill O’Reilly were also fired from Fox News following sexual misconduct claims against them.

Finding Quality Discount Bikes

Finding Quality Discount Bikes

by

Dave McIntosh

Cycling to work or school has become an attractive option as people look for more economical ways to make the trip. Using a bike to commute has a number of benefits however those that do it regularly know that unless the commute is less than a few blocks, it is important to use a bicycle that will stand up to this regular use. That with the economy the way it is causes people to look for discount bikes as they are looking for a quality commuter bike.

Bikes are not cheap these days especially when you have to forego the less expensive models in order to find the quality that will stand up to the rigors of daily use. Quality discount bikes are not found in your local discount retail stores and you ve got to know that the bikes in these stores will not stand up long to riding miles to work each day. While a quality bike might initially be more expensive you will save on the repairs and replacement parts to keep your bike going over the course of a few months.

There are a number of ways to find bikes being sold at a discount. A couple of the tricks are knowing where to look and how to negotiate a deal. You can even get some great deals for a local dealer if you know what you are doing.

Retailers are in the business to make money and we all know that we just don t want them to make it all on our purchase. In actual fact a retailer is looking to find a point of perfect balance in their pricing. That balance is where consumers recognize the price as fair, the retailer can make some money and the demand for the product remains consistent. If a price is too high, demand will go down, therefore fewer units will sell and sometimes the company would have been better off to make less money per unit and sell more.

What I m saying is lower prices can make the demand higher, stimulating profits on volume, rather than on each individual item. This is the tactic used by big bulk and discount retailers. This is a lot harder to do for the little local bike retailer but never the less this strategy is used by some of them typically in the spring or fall when they are looking to sell off last year s models.

Searching online is another place to find discount bikes. It is also a great place to check out the different brands and read all about their different attributes. While you re doing that you can also be looking to see if there are any on sale. You might also try contacting these online vendors to see if they have any bikes being sold at a discount that aren t presently listed on their website. They may have some that have just gone off sale or are about to come up on discount that they would be willing to sell you for their discount price.

Buying discount bikes is a great way to save money and get a quality bike a t the same time. Typically there is nothing wrong with these bikes the retailer whether in town or on line are just trying to stimulate sales by doing more volume.

Canadian boy, sucked into water pump, loses feet

Tuesday, July 11, 2006

A seven-year-old boy’s feet were severed after he was sucked into a water pump at a swimming pool. He is in intensive care as police investigate the water-park accident.

He was seriously injured yesterday when his feet became stuck in a pump that circulates water in one of the pools at Le Camping des Glissades d’eau St-Pie, in Sainte-Pie, Québec, 55 km (35 miles) east of Montréal.

Doctors amputated the boy’s legs below the knee. The boy will be given prosthetic feet.

“He should be able to walk by the end of the summer and to be back to school,” said, doctors. “He will have to learn to walk again.”

Park spokesman Denis Arcand said, “the pump did not have a protective grill over it at the time of the accident”.

The park is now closed and will stay closed while police are investigating.
