Smart-1 probe ends mission with planned crash into the Moon

Tuesday, September 5, 2006

Observatories around the world watched the skies early on Sunday morning as a European space probe, the SMART-1 crash landed on the Moon; the first time a European made object has landed there and, as the first, it made quite a bang. For the culmination of its three-year mission the probe left its orbit around our nearest neighbor and smashed into the Lake of Excellence at around 4,500 mph. The impact created a brand new crater and scattered debris up to 30 miles, in contrast to the gentle touchdown of the Eagle lander (when Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon) 37 years ago.

Livingstone brands Boris ‘a joke’ in London mayoral elections

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

On the final day of campaigning before the vote in the London mayoral election, incumbent Ken Livingstone attacked main rival Boris Johnson as “a joke”. He warned Londoners that they were not voting in a “Celebrity Mayor” contest.

Livingstone unveiled a campaign poster in West Ham that will also be printed on postcards and sent to one million Londoners. It reads: “Don’t vote for a joke. Vote for London.”

“It’s not an election for the host of Have I Got News For You or a celebrity mayor. It’s about who is best placed to run an £11bn budget every year,” Mayor Livingstone said, referring to the panel game show, for which Boris Johnson has been a guest host.

“Tomorrow you have a choice between new policies and fresh energy from a new mayor in City Hall or more of the same from a tired, out-of-date administration that is beset by allegations of sleaze,” responded Johnson in a mass e-mail to over 500,000 voters. “I am optimistic about London’s future and believe we can make London a greater place to live in.”

London will be voting for mayor tomorrow, May 1. Ken Livingstone is the candidate for The Labour Party and Boris Johnson is the candidate for the Conservative Party. There are a number of other candidates, but recent opinion polls have shown it to be a two-person race, with some polls predicting a victory for Livingstone and others Johnson.

Pomeranian Dog Care Essentials

By Bruno

Pomeranian dogs, which are also referred to as poms, are petite dog breeds that have lithe bodies covered with ‘tons’ of fur. These are mainly concentrated around the neck region of this toy dog. This balloon-like fur concentration around their neck gives them the appearance which resembles that of a male lion. Unlike their bigger counterpart, this furry dog breed is generally gentle and well-mannered.

This adorable pet dog is a direct cousin of dogs from the Spitz line and is a native of the region of Pomerania, a land-locked area that covers parts of Poland and Germany. Pomeranians were originally used as sheep herding dogs, but today, they are exclusively considered as companion dogs. Queen Victoria has been instrumental in popularizing this breed, and she even had her kennel in the late 18th century.

The Pomeranian dogs that were bred then were the larger types and weighed about 30 lbs, which are much larger than today’s poms, which normally weigh about 5 to 7 lbs. With their lion-like appearance and puffy fur coat, no other breed comes close to this toy dog when it comes to their cutesy look. The more common colors of poms are orange ands red, although there are some poms that come in other colors as well.

Pomeranian Grooming Essentials

Proper grooming is one of your major concerns, if you have a pet pom. Because of their thick coat, their fur is prone to matting. You must be properly prepared and willing to spend a considerable amount of time brushing your pet pom. Pomeranians continuously shed their outer fur coat and shed their undercoat twice a year. Thus, this is not an ideal pet dog for those who are too finicky about having dog hair on furniture and clothing. Owners of poms must also care for the eyes and ears of their toy dog more often compared to other breeds, and these should be cleaned regularly.

Pomeranian Feeding Essentials

Pomeranians don’t require any special feed ration or diet. Puppy food is perfectly fine with them even when they are still young. You can then gradually shift to adult dog food as they become older. However, you should avoid feeding your pet pom anything other than dog treats and dog rations.

Pom Potty Training Essentials

Just like with most of the other dog breeds, pet poms are also potty trained. You have to learn how to use puppy pads or old newspapers to potty train your pet poms. You have to closely watch over your pet poms after they go potty as the feces tend to stick on their back fur. To prevent fur messes every time they go potty, you have to regularly trim their back fur. You may also consider to potty train your pet pom by having them go to the bathroom in a litter box. Don’t forget to reward your pet pom every time they go potty to reinforce this positive behavior.

Common Pomeranian Problems

Responsible pet ownership requires that you are fully aware of the problems which are breed-specific. One of the major issues with Pomeranians is their compulsive barking. Unless they are given a firm kind of training while they are still young, a young pom can be a real nuisance, especially when they go to a barking spell in the dead of the night. You have to be assertive and firm so that your pet Pomeranian learns when it is appropriate to bark.

Poms are ideal family pets. However, they don’t get along well with small children. You have to take preventive measures so that your toddler or small kid doesn’t get nipped by your pet pom. Pomeranians don’t generally bite; however, they will definitely nip if they are threatened.

Woman returns home with Christmas turkey, a month after setting out

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

A Scottish woman who set out before Christmas to purchase a turkey finally made it home on Monday, after being cut off by snow for a month. Kay Ure left the Lighthouse Keeper’s cottage on Cape Wrath, at the very northwest tip of Great Britain, in December. She was heading to Inverness on a shopping trip.

However on her return journey heavy snow and ice prevented her husband, John, from travelling the last 11 miles to pick her up. She was forced to wait a month in a friend’s caravan, before the weather improved and the couple could finally be reunited.

They were separated not just for Christmas and New Year, but also for Mr Ure’s 58th birthday. With no fresh supplies, he was reduced to celebrating with a tin of baked beans. He also ran out of coal, and had to feed the couple’s six springer spaniels on emergency army rations.

“It’s the first time we’ve been separated”, said Mr Ure in December. “We’ve been snowed in here for three weeks before, so we are well used to it and it’s quite nice to get a bit of peace and quiet.”

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

byadmin

Kitz has long been known as a brand and a company with a top reputation in developing durable, long-lasting and easy to work with parts and components. The line of Kitz valves offers all of these benefits, making the valves offered by the manufacturer a top option in even the most demanding and critical types of applications.

Options in Valves

As can be expected from one on of the leading manufacturers of valves on the planet, the types of valves the company produces are extensive. They are known for a top selection in globe, check, gate, ball and butterfly valves as well as strainer types of valves as well.

Unlike some valve manufacturers only offering standard sizes to meet the system requirements in specific industries, Kitz and their brands are designed to fit pipes and work in systems from a half an inch to up to 48 inches in their general product range.

In all, the company produces over forty thousand different types, sizes, and options in standard valves. They also manufacture specialty valves for customers around the world.

Specialized Valves

Specialized Kitz valves can be ordered to manage oversized pipe, high pressure ranges outside of the ANSI class ratings on standard valves as well as to meet specific temperature requirements.

For custom and standard valves, the company also offers a range of materials including stainless steel, carbon steel, titanium, Inconel, Hastelloy, Duplex and other types of specialized materials for demanding and unique applications.

When choosing to use Kitz valves on any job, contractors and project managers know they are getting a reliable, tested valve. The company completes full stress-testing and analysis on all valves to ensure they can stand up to the jobs for which they are rated.

Iran’s morality police crack down on un-Islamic dress

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

The Iranian police forces have faced criticism from Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi, the head of the judiciary who was appointed by Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for their re-invigorated campaign to do away with un-Islamic dress.

Ayatollah Shahroudi proclaimed, “Tough measures on social problems will backfire and have counter-productive effects.” Others have, of course, made it clear that un-Islamic dress can lead to moral corruption, engender innumerable vices, and hurt the Islamic character of the nation.

Some believe that no one had any issue with the creation of an Islamic atmosphere. The core of the matter revolves around the implementation of the Islamic dress code; additionally, heavy-handed measures should be shunned. For instance, Mehdi Ahmadi, information head of Tehran’s police, told Al Jazeera: “Some citizens may complain about the way the law is being enforced but they all agree with the plan itself.”

According to one student, “You simply can’t tell people what to wear. They don’t understand that use of force only brings hatred towards them, not love.” Nevertheless, Hojatoll-Islam Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, Iran’s interior minister who is in charge of policing, prognosticated positive feedback from the populace when he said, “People are unhappy with the social and moral status of the society. They expect that the fight against social insecurity be properly implemented.” Thus, Hujjat al-Islam Pour-Mohammadi re-iterated the necessity of proper implementation and methodology towards the restoration of morality in the Islamic Republic. Islamic officials and religious people affirm that this is indispensable to promote righteousness, curb sin, and bring open sinners to justice.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, hijab became mandatory in Iran for every woman including foreigners after over 98% of citizens voted for an Islamic government. Women may face caning up to 74 strokes for failing to observe hijab. In this recent crackdown, the authorities have arrested many citizens throughout the country. Not only have women been taken into custody for their hair being uncovered on their foreheads and tight clothes that show body shapes, For men they need to cover from knee to their waist as according to Sharia. Even a foreign journalist was detained because the photograph on her press card was indecent.

It has not been clear whence the directive for the re-newed clampdown emanated. Some have blamed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while Gholam Hossein Elham, the government spokesman, stated to reporters, “The police work as agents of the judiciary to confront crimes. The government as an executive body does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.” The following pre-election speech seems to corroborate this latter statement:

In reality, is the problem of our people the shape of the hair of our children? Let our children arrange their hair any way they wish. It doesn’t concern me and you. Let you and me overhaul the basic problems of the nation. The government should fix the economy of the nation and improve its atmosphere…[It should] better psychological security and support the people. People have variegated tastes. As if now the arch obstacle of our nation is the arrangement of our kids’ hair and the government disallowing them <He chuckles>. Is this the government’s responsibility? Is this the people’s merit? In actuality, this is the denigration of our people. Why do you underestimate and belittle the people? It is the real issue of our nation that one of our daughters donned a certain dress? Is this the issue of our nation and the problem of our nation?
