Small plane with one pilot crashes near Virginia airport

Wednesday, April 1, 2015

A small plane, piloted by sixteen-year-old Ryan McCall, crashed near Orange County Airport in Virginia, at about 9:45 a.m. local time Sunday morning, police said. He was killed in the accident.

The boy, Ryan McCall, a sophomore at Riverbend High School in Spotsylvania County, was alone on the plane. The plane, a 1974 Piper, model PA28140, crashed in a field just east of the airport. The plane belonged to Springfield, Virginia resident William Rushing III.

Flying instructors suggested birds might have contributed to the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are continuing their investigation as to what actually happened. Sixteen-year-old pilots are common, according to Virginia Aviation Board President Johnny Meza. He said a sixteen-year-old flying either alone or with a certified pilot is allowed. The NTSB predicted five to ten business days for a preliminary report.

The Spotsylvania County school district sent out a memorandum saying the school’s administration is working with counsellors to help students cope with the loss of their classmate. The statement said in part, “We were very saddened to hear the news about the death of Riverbend High Sophomore Ryan McCall.” Grief counsellors were available at the school to provide support to students.

The boy’s remains were sent to a medical examiner’s office for autopsy.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Cattle Biologics Manufacturing Market Trends And Forecast 2014 2020

Cattle biologics are defined as the vaccines, bacterins, diagnostics etc which helps to prevent, diagnose or treat the disease conditions in cattle and calves. These product works through some immunological pathway. The cattle biologics manufacturing market consist of four major segments on the basis of the products namely:

 • Vaccines

 • Pre-breeding vaccines for calves

 • Antibodies

 • Diagnostic kits

Among these categories, vaccines and pre-breeding vaccines for calves capture the major share of the market. Vaccines are provided to both cattle and calves, especially the new born calves to save them from various diseases such as clostridial diseases, anthrax, bovine virus diarrhea and vibriosis. On the basis of type of manufacturing the cattle biologics manufacturing market is divided into four main categories which include:

 • Bacterins

 • Bacterin Toxoid

 • Non-bacterins

 • Custom made Vaccines

Bacterins include vaccines which are made from killed bacteria, while the bacterin toxoids include vaccines which are made from live bacteria. In cattle vaccination, bacterin toxoid is preferred over other vaccination due to its long lasting effect. Texas Vet Lab, Inc. is one of the major market players of bacterins and bacterin toxoid and it is offering a wide range of products in its portfolio such as moraxella ovis, unique serovars of Salmonella and Histophilus Somni. Custom-made vaccines are also capturing a major part of the cattle biologics manufacturing market and have been complement to “off-the-shell” products in the U.S. market. Custom-made vaccines are the vaccines which are manufactured from the specific virus or bacteria which is major cause of disease in livestock operation. Newport Laboratories is one of the market players which is offering custom-made vaccines to the producers and veterinarians which gives them option to prepare a mixture of different products, modified according to producer that is not commercially available.

Download Brochure of this Report:

Pre-breeding vaccination includes the vaccines, which are given to calves at the age between 12 months to 15 months. These vaccines are provided to calves to protect them against common reproductive diseases. On the basis of the vaccines which are provided to the calves, cattle biologics manufacturing market is divided into six major classes:

 • Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD)

 • Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR)

 • Leptospirosis

 • Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV)

 • Clostridium

 • Trichomoniasis

Among these the bovine viral diarrhea is most commonly used vaccine followed by leptospirosis and trichomoniasis. All these pre-breeding vaccinations protect calves from delayed breeding, smaller calves, potential abortions and persistently infected calves.

North America and Europe currently lead the cattle biologics manufacturing market majorly due to strong economic conditions and large number of cattle population. The major market of Europe is driven by Switzerland, which is known for cows and cattle. In 2010, there were 1,591, 233 cattle in Switzerland. Additionally, the government of U.S. and Europe has also setup some regulatory firms which are also helping the market to grow. As in Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regulates veterinary biologics and animal health products such as antibody products, vaccines, diagnostic kits that are used for the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of infectious diseases in animals. Other major market players in cattle biologics market include Addison Cattle Corporation, Agrilabs, Biocor Animal Health, Inc., Boehringer Ingelheim, Colorado Serum Company, Durvet, Inc., Fort Dodge Animal Health, Merial, Novartis AG and Pfizer, Inc.

Tonga: Four guilty over ferry disaster that killed 74

Friday, April 1, 2011

Tonga’s largest criminal trial today ended in the conviction of four men and the state shipping firm over the sinking of MV Princess Ashika. 74 were killed when the ferry went down off Nuku’alofa in 2009.

The vast majority of bodies remain missing. Only two were recovered, including one Tongan — a 21-year-old mother called Vae Fetu’u Taufa. The Shipping Corporation of Polynesia (SCP) manager John Jonesse, acting director of the national department for ports and marine affairs Viliami Tu’ipulotu, captain Viliami Makahokovalu Tuputupu, and first mate Semisi Pomale were all convicted of her manslaughter by negligence. The men were remanded into custody over the weekend to await sentencing; they face a maximum of ten years in jail.

Justice Shuster cited the severity of the offences in denying bail, which was requested by Laki Niu and Vuna Fa’otusia, attorneys representing the accused.

Built in the early 1970s, by 1985 the ferry was found to be unseaworthy and hence not suited for use in deep water. When SCP bought it in 2009 from Fiji, it suffered from “huge” rusting holes and on August 5 that year sank in deep water during a storm. Most passengers were sleeping below deck when the ship was lost near the island of Tongatapu, where it remains on the seabed. No women or children escaped.

The six-week trial followed a royal commission of inquiry that found Jonesse, from New Zealand, bought Princess Ashika “without any proper due diligence, surveys, inspections, valuations, documentation or proper inquiry having been completed.” It also concluded Tuputupu chose to sail that day despite the ship leaking on other journeys. The inquiry branded the loss “a result of systemic and individual failures… The tragedy is that they were all easily preventable and the deaths were completely senseless.”

SCP was convicted of charges concerning the vessel’s seaworthiness by the jury, which sat in Tonga’s parliament building after the trial’s high profile saw it moved away from Nuku’alofa Supreme Court.

Jonesse and Tuputupu have both been convicted of five counts of taking an unseaworthy ship to sea under the Shipping Act, for voyages held on July 3, July 9, July 15, July 23 and August 5. Jonesse is also guilty of forgery and knowingly using a forged document.

Recall of Thomas the Tank Engine toys due to lead-paint fears

Thursday, June 21, 2007

A recall issued last week for Thomas the Tank Engine toys made in China and containing lead-based paint, is the latest scare for consumers, and follows recent scandals involving Chinese-made pet food, pharmaceuticals, toothpaste and other toys, The New York Times has reported in a series of articles.

Last week, RC2, a U.S. toy company based in Oak Brook, Illinois, issued a recall for its popular wooden “Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends” train sets. The recall involved 1.5 million “Thomas Wooden Railway” vehicles and train sets sold at toy stores and various retailers across the U.S. from January 2005 through June 2007.

A subsequent recall has been issued in the United Kingdom, where Thomas the Tank Engine was originated in the 1940s as a character in a children’s story by the Reverend W.V. Awdry. Around 70,000 toys are involved in the U.K. recall, according to The Guardian.

“RC2 has determined that the surface paints on the recalled products contain lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a press release dated June 13. “Consumers should take the recalled toys away from young children immediately and contact RC2 Corp. for a replacement toy,” the commission said.

Those “adverse health effects” could include brain and nerve damage, especially in young children, as well as blood and brain disorders. Severe lead poisoning causes vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, anemia, loss of appetite, headaches and in particularly high doses, coma and death.

In an article on Monday, The New York Times reported that recalls have been issued for 24 different toys in the U.S. in the past year, and every one of them was made in China. According to the Toy Industry Association, toys made in China account for around 70 percent to 80 percent of all the toys sold in the U.S., The Times said.

“These are items that children are supposed to be playing with,” Prescott Carlson was quoted as saying by The Times. Carlson is a co-founder of a child-safety website called Imperfect Parent, which tracks recalls of toys and other baby products. “It should be at a point where companies in the United States that are importing these items are held liable,” Carlson said.

RC2 would not comment to The Times, and a Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman would not say how long ago the problem with the lead paint was discovered.

For a follow-up article on Tuesday, The Times visited a factory in Dongguan, in China’s Guangdong province, where the “Thomas and Friends” toys are made. The paper interviewed workers and took photos on the factory floor.

“You’re intruding,” a factory manager identified only as Zhong was quoted as telling the reporters. “Tell me, why exactly are you here?”

During the visit, a reporter, translator and a photographer were detained by factory officials, and released a day later after local police and government officials intervened.

The factory also produces other toys for RC2, including toy John Deere trucks, NASCAR racing models and M&M’s cars, The Times said. RC2 makes the toys under licenses from various companies. The “Thomas and Friends” toys are made under license from Hit Entertainment, which owns the “Thomas” brand.

According to RC2, items in the “Thomas and Friends” recall are:

 • Red James Engine & Red James’ # 5 Coal Tender
 • Red Lights & Sounds James Engine & Red James’ #5
 • Lights & Sounds Coal Tender
 • James with Team Colors Engine & James with Team Colors *#5 Coal Tender
 • Red Skarloey Engine
 • Brown & Yellow Old Slow Coach
 • Red Hook & Ladder Truck & Red Water Tanker Truck
 • Red Musical Caboose
 • Red Sodor Line Caboose
 • Red Coal Car labeled “2006 Day Out With Thomas” on the Side
 • Red Baggage Car
 • Red Holiday Caboose
 • Red “Sodor Mail” Car
 • Red Fire Brigade Truck
 • Red Fire Brigade Train
 • Deluxe Sodor Fire Station
 • Red Coal Car
 • Yellow Box Car
 • Red Stop Sign
 • Yellow Railroad Crossing Sign
 • Yellow “Sodor Cargo Company” Cargo Piece
 • Smelting Yard
 • Ice Cream Factory

Toys listed that are marked with codes containing “WJ” or “AZ” are not included in the recall.

Earlier, RC2 said that customers would have to cover shipping costs to return the toys to the company. It later agreed to cover postage after angry complaints by parents, The Times said in an article yesterday. Refunds will take about two months.

China’s consumer prices rise to a three-year high in June as food prices soar 14.4 percent

Monday, July 11, 2011

China’s National Bureau of Statistics released data Saturday showing that the consumer price index (CPI) for June climbed 6.4% from a year ago. That compares with a 5.5% rise in May, which was the largest since a 6.3% increase in July 2008. The major factor contributing to this figure was the steep rise in food prices which climbed 14.4%. Pork is a major food staple in China, and its price rose 65% from last year.

Analysts predicted that China’s inflation would peak in June, but particularly worrisome was the steep rise in the cost of food from the same time last year and up from 11.7% in May, indicating that Beijing may have difficulty in controlling inflation.

We must treat stabilising overall price levels as the top priority … and keep the direction of macro-economic adjustments unchanged.

China is the world’s second largest economy, having grown robustly in the last two years driven by a 2009 governmental stimulus package of $586 billion and low interest rates offered by state-owned banks. These were directed at promoting investments in real estate construction and government infrastructure projects, enabling China to lead the global recovery after the collapse of the U.S. mortgage market led to a worldwide recession.

Now Beijing is attempting to slow its fast pace of growth, fearful of inflation, by restricting bank lending and raising interest rates. High inflation along with high property values could hurt the economy. Since October, China’s Central Bank has raised interest rates five times.

Many factors are contributing to China’s inflation, including higher wages for migrant workers, increases in the prices of food and gasoline, as well as diminished output from crucial agricultural areas cause by droughts and flooding this spring.

Today, China’s Premier Wen Jiabao indicated that the war on inflation was continuing and controlling inflation was a top priority for the government, increasing expectations that interest rates would be further increased.

If they signal any comfort with inflation, and inflation is as high as it is now, they could create an environment in which people would panic, and they can have a real problem on their hands.

“We must treat stabilising overall price levels as the top priority of our macro-economic controls and keep the direction of macro-economic adjustments unchanged,” Wen said today in comments reported on the central government’s website. He had said in March that the ruling Communist Party is worried that a continuing rise in food prices could result in public protests.

Wen said the government would boost the supply of hogs to keep the price of pork stable, the price of pork being the major contributor to China’s food inflation index and the most closely watched item on it.

“If they signal any comfort with inflation, and inflation is as high as it is now, they could create an environment in which people would panic, and they can have a real problem on their hands,” said Tim Condon, Asian researcher at ING.

As markets worried about the news of Chinese inflation as well as concerns about the European debt crisis, oil dropped below US$95 a barrel today.

Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax dies

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

Ernest Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, died in his Lake Geneva, Wisconsin home on Tuesday at the age of 69 due to heart problems.

Dave Arneson’s Blackmoor was the first role-playing game, a genre in which players describe their characters in thorough detail and can attempt almost any action the character plausibly could. Gygax, then a close friend of Arneson, worked with him during 1972-73 to develop the extensive set of rules (in this case three volumes) that such a game requires. This became the first edition of Dungeons & Dragons. He also fleshed out the default setting for the game, a “sword-and-sorcery” world inspired primarily by fantasy fiction such as Three Hearts and Three Lions. He then founded TSR Inc. to publish the game; although it was a runaway success, financial difficulties ultimately forced the company to sell itself to Wizards of the Coast, which currently publishes the game and is now a subsidiary of Hasbro.

Although not involved with later editions of D&D, Gygax later worked on other role-playing games and wrote fantasy novels. He also designed niche-market board games.

Dungeons & Dragons is considered a tabletop RPG, since it is played with pen, paper, dice and miniature figures. It inspired other tabletop RPGs (such as GURPS), as well as video RPGs (such as the Final Fantasy series). The most recent form of RPG is the massively-multiplayer online roleplaying game, such as World of Warcraft. An estimated 20 million people worldwide have played the game. Magazines, print and web comics and independent bands have been dedicated to the game, as have thousands of fan websites.

Gygax’s death comes mere months before the scheduled release of the 4th Edition of D&D in June, as well as a scheduled “GM Day” among D&D fans on the internet.

Drone smartphone app to help heart attack victims in remote areas announced

Monday, August 26, 2013

German non-profit organization Definetz announced on Friday the development of the ‘Defikopter’: a medical drone, launched by smartphone app, designed to be able to fly defibrillators to heart attack victims in remote areas quicker than an ambulance.

The Defikopter is to be launched by an app that sends out the GPS coordinates of the victim. With the ability to fly at 70km per hour in all weather conditions, the eight-armed octocopter could reach any patient within a ten kilometre radius.

The invention has received cautious praise from German medical services; the drone is still in the development and testing stage. Definetz and collaborating drone builder Height Tech have not issued any information about the release of the smartphone app or about when the drone will be available for medical services to purchase.

“We’ll have to see how much these drones can help,” German emergency services union representative Marco König told The Local. German news site Mittelbayerische reports a price tag of €20,000 (US$26,000) apiece.

One major problem Definetz faces is the law that requires all unmanned flying vehicles in Germany to be supervised. Another is that only members of the public who downloaded the app ‘just in case’ of an emergency, plus emergency workers with the app, could summon a drone.

Lxb Retail Confirm 70 Million Stafford Riverside Development.

LXB Retail confirm 70 million Stafford riverside development.

by

UK Biz

LXB Retail, the AIM-listed REIT, which came to market after Max Property as a retail play in 2009 led by Tim Walton, a property industry veteran who has built and sold portfolios twice before, confirmed today that it has pulled together two riverside sites in Stafford for a new 70 million development.

The two long leasehold sites are on opposite sides of the River Sow, the main 4.75 acre site is presently temporary car parking, whilst the opposite 1.85 acre site is presently a vacant foodstore with adjacent multi-storey car park.

In addition LXB are in discussions with Stafford Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council over the purchase of the town\’s Kingsmead car park which would also be developed as a retail site.

It is anticipated that the development will provide over 1200 car parking spaces and about 220,000 sq ft of retail accommodation. Outline terms have already been agreed with an anchor tenant for around 65,000 sq ft and LXB intends submitting a planning application later this year with construction work anticipated to start next year.

Tim Walton Chief Executive of LXB Manager LLP, said;

\”This is another exciting retail development opportunity for LXB Retail which was recognised as one of our \’pipeline\’ opportunities with a well located site, identifiable tenant demand and pro-active local authorities and typifies the areas in which we seek to do business. We look forward to helping to enhance the retail facilities of Stafford town centre with a high quality development\”.

LXB got off to a less publicised start than Max Property and raised only 100 million initially, but subsequently it showed it\’s competance, buying a site in Greenwich which it has subsequently added to and has now signed a 25 year lease agreement for a new 145,000 sq ft Sainsbury\’s store for.

There has been further investment in LXB this year, so in addition to the 100 million initially raised a further 47.6 million was added in the following months and 110 million was raised last month, as Blackrock took a sizeable chunk.

LXB pipeline comprises a 31 acre site in Rushden, Northants and an Isle of Sheppey site, (bought from Wm Morrison Supermarkets)

The Jersey-based company is chaired by retail veteran Phil Wrigley, the former chairman of New Look, with Steve Webb, Tesco s director of investor relations, and Alastair Irvine, founder of the Seriously Strong Cheddar brand, as non-executive directors.
