China ends presidential term limits in constitutional amendment

On Sunday, China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) voted to amend the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China in several ways, including eliminating term limits for the offices of President and Vice President. The changes mean Xi Jinping may be President for life if he so chooses.

United States President Trump dismisses Secretary of State Tillerson

United States President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, that Rex Tillerson will no longer serve as the Secretary of State. Trump will nominate Mike Pompeo, the current CIA director as Tillerson’s successor, and Deputy Director Gina Haspel will be nominated to replace Pompeo.

US toy retail giant Toys ‘R’ Us files for liquidation in United States

On Thursday morning, United States-based toy retail giant Toys “R” Us filed for liquidation with United States bankruptcy court. The company had about 735 stores in the country which may be closed as a result of the liquidation.

State of emergency in Sri Lanka remains despite calm returning after violence

Schools reopened on Monday in Sri Lanka and the government said they had arrested hundreds of people for participating in anti-Muslim riots. A state of emergency remained in effect in the island nation which had been gripped by widespread violence which started in the Central Province.

Mirror’s exposé prompts call for inquiry into child abuse ring in Telford, England

On Monday, Lucy Allan MP called for a public inquiry into an alleged child sexual exploitation ring in Telford, Shropshire, England, which may have been operating for 40 years and had as many as a thousand girls as victims.
