Burris sworn in as US Senator for Illinois

Friday, January 16, 2009

American politician Roland Burris of the United States Democratic Party was sworn in Thursday as US president-elect Barack Obama’s replacement in the United States Senate.

Burris was initially not admitted into the Senate, even though Governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich appointed him to the position, due to allegations that the governor tried to sell the seat. Blagojevich was arrested and has been impeached for the alleged crime. Burris was denied his position on January 6 by other Democratic members of the Congress because his appointment papers were not signed by Jesse White, the Illinois Secretary of State, who had refused to sign his name due to the charges faced by Blagojevich.

Burris was officially sworn in by United States Vice President Dick Cheney with no objections from other members of the Congress. Harry Reid, the senior Democratic senator from Nevada and majority leader, who had led the opposition to Burris being appointed, welcomed him into the Senate.

“On behalf of all senators, Democrats and Republicans, we welcome you as a colleague and a friend,” Reid said.

“No one’s ever had anything against Sen. Burris. Like any other senator, he’ll have to learn the ropes and not get lost getting to committee hearings, like I have. I think he’ll come in with people open to meeting with him and getting to know him. I think it will be just fine,” said Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota on the matter. Most other comments by senators stated that they were not against Burris as a person, but were against his appointment by Rod Blagojevich.

With the appointment, Burris becomes the only African-American member of the United States Senate. This makes the count of Democrats to Republicans in the Senate 58 Democrats and 41 Republicans, with the final seat waiting on a vote recount ordered by Norm Coleman in his loss to Al Franken of Minnesota.

Conference discusses the credibility of blogs

Friday, January 21, 2005

Seeking to “bring together a select group of thoughtful bloggers and journalists”, at Harvard today opened a two-day, by-invitation only, Blogging, Journalism and Credibility: Battleground and Common Ground conference.

Held at the Kennedy School of Government, the conference was an initiative of the American Library Association’s, Berkman Center for Internet and Society and the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy.

“One of the problems [with blogs],” said Dan Gillmor of Grassroots Media Inc., “is that any random website can look as good as any other website. We’re going to be working this through for a long time. We’re going to have to tell people, be skeptical.”

Addressing the question of credibility, both in mainstream media and in the new media self-publishing “blogosphere”, is one of the goals of the conference. The rapid transformation of the blogging media, its acceptance and repudiation as a form of journalism, is also a topic slated for discussion.

Corporate media has flirted with, disputed, and been directly affected by, bloggers. Future possible interactions between the new, blogging media, and mainstream media, provide topics for discussion.

Attendees and speakers included both established and new media names, academics and professionals, and amateurs. Topics covered ranged from jargon and terminology, through business models, and on to more esoteric subjects like “podcasting” and “vlogging”.

UPDATE: The conference wound up with a session covering issues identified during the conference and an open session of free-ranging discussion.

Riots in Greece enter fourth night

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

The riots in Greece that started on December 6 have entered their fourth night. These are the worst riots the Hellenic Republic has witnessed in decades.

The riots were triggered when Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a 15-year-old student, was shot and killed by police. The police claim that Grigoropoulos was throwing a bomb at them when they fired.

Cities throughout Greece have been hit by the unrest, not just Athens. Hundreds of shops and businesses have been destroyed.

“No one has the right to use this tragic incident as an excuse for acts of violence,” said Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, New Democracy party.

“The government cannot handle this crisis and has lost the trust of the Greek people,” George Papandreou of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement said. “The best thing it can do is resign and let the people find a solution … We will protect the public.”

The rioters are organizing on the campus of National Technical University of Athens (Athens Polytechnic). A constitutional clause enacted after the overthrow of the Greek military junta of 1967–1974 prevents security forces from entering the campus.

The Guardian is reporting that the University is being used by young men and women to stock up on firebombs and break up marble slabs to throw at police. From behind their makeshift barriers, they vowed the unrest would become “an uprising the likes of which Greece has never seen.”

“We are experiencing moments of a great social revolution,” leftist activist Panagiotis Sotiris told Reuters. Sotiris is among those occupying a university building. “The protests will last as long as necessary,” he added.

“A switch has been flicked and the pressure cooker’s boiled over,” said David Lea, an analyst at Control Risks Group in London, to Bloomberg News. “There are certain places where anarchists are more likely to inspire violence, and that’s Greece.”

Two police officers have been charged in the shooting death of Grigoropoulos, who was buried on Tuesday.

Colon Cleansing: The Essential Role Of The Caecum

By Max Hill

Dr Christopher popularized his famous herbal ‘Lower Bowel Tonic’, also called ‘cascara compound’ capsules, during the 60’s and 70’s. The great value of this formula was that it quite easily produced 2-3 bowel movements a day for most of its regular users, many of whom had not experienced this for many years.

The logic of having 2-3 bowel movements daily is that if you eat 3 times a day, you should pass out waste 3 times a day too. This is a healthy bowel regularity. If a person doesn’t do this, it indicates that their bowel has become used to ‘hanging on’ to the food waste in a reservoir somewhere.

The Unhealthy ‘Reservoir’

This ‘reservoir somewhere’ is the Caecum, located just before the rectum at the very end of the colon’s journey out of the body. Anatomically, the Caecum is at the front, lower left of the abdomen. And, surely, many people feel gurgling or discomfort in this area from time to time. Here, food waste can putrefy – because it will do this, when it is being ‘stored’ for up to 24 hours, or even longer, at body temperature. Yuk!

The confirmation of this ‘reservoir’ theory – if it were needed – is that many x-rays of the bowel show the Caecum to be ‘ballooned’ in a way which, it is clear even to the amateur, cannot be healthy. The Caecum is turned into a reservoir for food waste by losing its muscle function – its natural ‘peristaltic’ action. This action should move food waste right along and out of the body.

Get Rid Of That Reservoir

The solution to this situation is to RESTORE MUSCLE FUNCTION (peristalsis) to the Caecum, so that it can work as nature intended, and move food waste straight through to the rectum. You will then get the natural urge to evacuate, and this urge should be followed if it is at all convenient. This will happen about 3 times a day.

If you are on a bus and you get ‘the urge’ then, of course, you’ll just have to wait! And this is fine if it happens only occasionally. But the more often you can follow your natural urges in this respect, the less you will be holding on to old food waste, allowing it to putrefy in the body, and pour toxins into your blood stream.

Restore Peristalsis

Restoring the lost peristalsis to the whole bowel is what Dr Christopher created his wonderful Lower Bowel Tonic or herbal ‘cascara compound’ capsules, to do. After 6-9 months’ use for the average person, this herbal formula will restore the regularity of the colon – and even of the Caecum.

Over the years, many of my own patients have sworn by Dr Christopher’s formula. After using it for sufficient time, it is needed no longer; it ‘retrains’ the bowel muscle. Many of my patients have thought it was magic! But really, it’s action is based on common sense.

Royal Birth: Duchess of Cambridge gives birth to baby girl

Sunday, May 3, 2015

The UK’s Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge gave birth yesterday to a baby girl, and Kensington Palace announced, “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8:34 am.”

The announcement also said Catherine and the baby are “doing well.” The daughter of the royal couple was said to weigh 8lbs 3oz.

Earlier in the day Catherine was admitted in labour into the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London.

Kensington Palace released a statement that the Duchess went to the hospital by car and was admitted into Saint Mary’s at 6am local time.

The baby is the fourth in line to the throne. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott stated, “On behalf of all Australians, Margie and I extend to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge congratulations on the birth of a daughter […] we wish the young Princess a long and happy life.” UK Prime Minister David Cameron sent well wishes earlier via Twitter, saying, “The whole country will wish her well.”

Prince George’s birth also took place in Saint Mary’s in 2013, and Prince William’s in 1982. Obstetrician Guy Thorpe-Beeston, along with Alan Farthing, surgeon gynaecologist to Queen Elizabeth II, were present for the second royal birth. The announcement of the birth also said, “The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry, and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.”

Scottish Ebola nurse Pauline Cafferkey ‘critically ill’ says Royal Free Hospital

Thursday, October 15, 2015

The Royal Free Hospital in London yesterday said a nurse suffering with complications after Ebola, Pauline Cafferkey, is “critically ill” after her condition deteriorated. Cafferkey, 39, was readmitted to an isolation unit at the Royal Free on the night of October 8–9 where she had spent time earlier in the year after contracting Ebola in Sierra Leone whilst treating patients with the infection.

The hospital said in a statement: “We are sad to announce that Pauline Cafferkey’s condition has deteriorated and she is now critically ill. She is being treated for Ebola in the high level isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital.”

Cafferkey visited an out of hours GP clinic on October 5 where her symptoms were not linked to Ebola, before deciding to go to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow on October 6 where she was treated at the hospital’s infectious diseases unit. Two days later, she was flown by plane to the Royal Free. She is the only person known to suffer with Ebola in this way for a second time, which can remain in the body after an initial recovery.

Jonathan Ball of the University of Nottingham said he’d heard of nothing like this. “I am not aware from the scientific literature of a case where Ebola has been associated with what we can only assume as life-threatening complications after someone has initially recovered, and certainly not so many months after.”

Pauline’s sister Toni Cafferkey was critical of the wrong diagnosis, telling the Sunday Mail newspaper, “At that point me and my family believe they missed a big opportunity to give the right diagnosis and we feel she was let down. Instead of being taken into hospital, she spent the whole of Tuesday very ill”.

A spokesperson for NHS Glasgow and Clyde said Pauline Cafferkey did receive a diagnosis from an out of hours clinic and said: “Her management and the clinical decisions taken based on the symptoms she was displaying at the time were entirely appropriate. All appropriate infection control procedures were carried out as part of this episode of care.”

Experts say they do not believe the infection recurring within Pauline Cafferkey is contagious despite monitoring 58 people she has been in contact with. This is said to be a precaution as Ebola can only be spread through body fluids and the infection is not creating the same symptoms associated with a one-off diagnosis of Ebola.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Proseries Led: Agriculture Market And Leds

byadmin

In order for swine and poultry production facilities to take advantage of energy-efficient LED lighting technology, they need a higher-quality agricultural LED luminaire that stands up to the rigors of their environments and power washing, yet are easy to install and maintain. Today’s producers recognize that energy-efficient LED lighting distribution is more even than fluorescent lighting and the color is a brighter white that is more user friendly in a barn environment. What’s more, LED technology generates more light with less heat, requiring less air conditioning. It means a reduction in the producer’s utility bill and its carbon footprint. Most utility companies also recognize the positive effects of energy-efficient lighting with rebates that financially support the transition to agricultural LED lights.

After retrofitting his 2,500-head swine production facility at Woodville Pork, Waseca, Minn., with the ProSeries LED Upgrade, Co-owner Chris Selthun raves about the time-savings. “We used to have to make a trip every week to buy CFLs or incandescent replacement lamps and deal with changing them out. Our 3,000-psi pressure washer is proof that the LED luminaire lives up to the product’s claim. In fact, when we added a new cold storage facility, there was no question about installing the ProSeries LED Luminaire. Plus, we figured with the rebate we’d see a three-year return on investment.”
