Suicide bomber kills at least 45 in Lahore, Pakistan

Friday, March 12, 2010

According to police, at least 45 people in Lahore, Pakistan were killed earlier on Friday after multiple suicide bombings. Over a hundred others were injured.

In the first incident, a double bombing apparently targeting military vehicles in RA Bazaar, a commercial and residential neighbourhood of Lahore, killed 45 people, among them ten troops. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah reported that the bombers arrived at the area by a motorbike and approached the vehicles, then detonated jackets containing 26 pounds of explosives, according to The Telegraph.

Chief of Punjab police Tariq Saleem Dogar said that “[t]wo suicide bombers attacked within the span of 15 to 20 seconds and they were on foot.”

A second attack, reportedly targeting a police station, is said to have killed at least four other people.

Senior Lahore police official Chaudhary Shaffiq Ahmed commented that “[t]he explosions occurred at a bus stop in RA Bazaar market. Two suicide attackers approached two patrolling army vehicles fifteen seconds apart causing the explosions.”

Some witnesses said they heard gunfire shortly before the explosions. “I saw smoke rising everywhere. A lot of people were crying,” recalled Afzal Awan, an eyewitness.

Local government blamed the Taleban for the bombings, although no group has, as of yet, claimed responsibility.

Australian government hopes to establish triage by phone

Sunday, January 29, 2006

The Australian federal government hopes to slash hospital emergency department waiting queues by setting up a 24-hour national medical hotline.

A government source said that the National Health Call Centre Network would be manned by registered triage nurses 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Triage nurses would perform a diagnosis over the phone based upon the description given by the patient. The patient would then be referred to the nearest emergency department, their local GP or pharmacy – as determined by the nurse.

The issue is expected to be discussed at next month’s Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Canberra. It is believed that the states and territories are supportive of the system.

If agreed upon by COAG, the service will be jointly funded by state/territory and the commonwealth governments at a cost of $40 million a year. The service would take 18 months to set up.

The service will be ran from a centralised call centre and be managed by a private contractor.

Julia Gillard, the opposition’s spokeswoman for health said any national call service needed to be linked with local GPs and medical services.

Gillard claims that under a Labor government, an after-hours “Pizza Hut” style service would be implemented, with a single national number connecting to a local call centre.

“You would be talking to people in the locality you are in and who know the local services,” she said

The Australian Medical Association, an organisation representing more than 27,000 doctors in Australia has slammed the proposal saying it will only deter people from seeking appropriate medical treatment.

The Truth About Oral Yeast Infection

By Linda D. Allen

Oral yeast infection, although often a temporary condition in babies, can be indicative of a malfunctioning adult autoimmune system. Also known as thrush or oral candiasis, oral yeast infection is a subtype of an infection of a fungal form that moves into the mucous areas of the mouth. If n further action is taken, oral thrush can also move into the throat and the esophagus and be the perpetrator of more serious complications.

Oral surfaces can predispose the multiplication of the yeast and disseminated infections. However, a mouth with yeasts does not necessarily get oral yeast infection. Candida species, predominantly Candida Albicans, are normal oral bacteria that are to be observed in 30% – 60% of healthy people. These bacteria live off their host without impact. Conditions opening the door for systemic infection include:

1. Drug therapies debilitating host defenses and modifying oral cavity.

2. Vulnerability orally to vectors of yeast infection, including food allergies, medication, mineral or vitamin deficiencies, mouth irritation, and so on.

3. Diseases sapping the strength of host defenses by their systemic nature.

4. Antibiotic treatments that change the equilibrium of the organisms in the intestines by killing beneficial gastrointestinal bacterial flora that typically hold Candida at bay.

5. Stress, anxiety or depression as psychological factors that contribute.

6. Modification of salivary patterns because of aspects such as Sjogren’s syndrome and types of antidepressants, which then boost multiplication of Candida.

7. Local oral factors, such as using dentures and the challenge of hygiene that they bring. Problems include bad hygiene from porous dentures and lack of washing or sluicing from saliva that unable to fully circulate. It is for this reason that yeast infection median prevalence is at 85% for users of dentures with normal oral mucosa, compared to just 37% of users with their own natural teeth.

8. Alterations in physiological conditions such as getting old, being pregnant, infancy, insufficiency of iron, diet considerations, affliction of diabetes, hypothyroidism, hypoadrenalism etc.

Most of the time, the oral yeast infection symptoms are:

1. A tongue that is red with no bright spots, leading to peeling surfaces or patches on the surface of the tongue.

2. Contrasted colors in the inner surface of the mouth where a red background highlights white, cream colored or yellow spots that bleed if scrubbed.

3. Angular Cheilitis or red cracks at the edges of the mouth.

4. Extra tissue (hyperplastie) that it is impossible to wipe off the mouth.

Oral yeast infection can also manifest itself by a disquieting burning feeling in the infected area, and also its visible symptoms.

Newborn babies are commonly under threat of oral yeast infection. If oral yeast infection is suspected, additional tests should be done. The first signs to look out for are restlessness and irritability during feedings, as well as refusal to accept a pacifier.

Certain anti-fungal drugs can effectively resolve oral thrush, like:

1. Ketoconazole (sold as mycelex, monistat and nizoral): antifungal drug breaking down the cell wall of the fungus to kill it.

2. Triazole antifungal agents, such as itraconazole and fluconazole. Fluconazole is usually to be taken orally in tablet or liquid form every day for a minimum of several weeks. Itraconazole is used as part of a continuous treatment typically lasting a minimum of 3 months or until a laboratory test shows no further fungal infection. Despite oral and intravenous possibilities, inferior absorption and a number of secondary effects (nausea, vomiting, fatigue, pain in the abdomen) figure among the disadvantages of Itraconazole.

3. Nystatin (sold as mycostatin, mycolog and nilstat): an antibiotic used for different subclasses of fungal infections. After 2 days of using this medicament, oral thrush is typically eliminated. Without toxicity and bacteria and virus tolerant, it can be taken orally three to fives times per day in tablet or liquid form. However, because of the multiple doses that are required, lower patient compliance may result.

4. Amphotericin B (brand names: fungizone, adria and apothecon): a strong antibiotic for eradicating fungal infections. It has a certain toxicity and may generate multiple different secondary effects. As a polyene antimycotic drug, the prescription is usually for severe cases of Candiasis involving hospitalization.

Medication therapy for oral candiasis is oriented towards the external symptoms of yeast infection, like much other conventional medication, without taking into account the internal reasons that boost Candida infection overgrowth. Alleviation brought by the medication is typically short term only, especially for recurring oral candiasis. Finally, long-term use of these drugs may result in secondary effects. Although there are differences in usage, these are elements in common with all of these medications for oral yeast infections.

Holistic and all-natural remedies can address the internal causes of oral yeast infection and also its immediate symptoms. In a different approach to that of prescribed medicaments, oral yeast infection can also be cured using herbal or homeopathic treatment, changes in diet, detox and in lifestyle. Symptoms are thus eradicated, as is candida infection recurrence.

Glasgow cannabis enthusiasts celebrate ‘green’ on city green

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Coinciding with Easter Sunday, Glasgow Cannabis Social Club’s annual 420 event was held on Glasgow Green, under sunny blue skies, and overlooking the river Clyde. Despite the city’s council attempting to revoke permission for the gathering at the last minute, police were happy for it to go-ahead with approximately a dozen officers attending in high-visibility vests.

The Daily Record reported five arrests were made for minor offences, likely smoking and possession of small quantities of cannabis. Taking a less-sensational — and more accurate — line of reporting, the Monday edition of Glasgow’s Evening News stated five were referred to the Procurator Fiscal who is responsible for deciding if charges should be brought.

Official figures provided by the police were that 150 attended. With people coming and going, Wikinews reporters estimated upwards of 200 attended, compared to nearly 700 who had signed up for the event on Facebook. Hemp goods were advertised and on sale at the event, and some attendees were seen drinking cannabis-themed energy drinks.

“I was searched and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act (which is a lot of bollocks)” one attendee noted online, adding “not fair to happen on a brilliant day like it was, other than that I had a great day!” A second said they were openly smoking and ignored by police, who “were only really focusing on people who looked particularly young”.

Cannabis seeds were openly and legally sold at the event and a hydroponics supplier brought a motortrike towing an advertising trailer. Actually growing cannabis is, however, illegal in the UK.

With the event openly advocating the legalisation of cannabis, speakers put their arguments for this to a receptive crowd. Retired police officer James Duffy, of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, spoke of the failed United States alcohol prohibition policy; stressing such policies needlessly bring people into contact with criminal elements. Highlighting other countries where legalisation has been implemented, he pointed out such led to lower crime, and lower drug use overall.

One speaker, who produced a bottle of cannabis oil he had received through the post, asserted this cured his prostate cancer. Others highlighted the current use of Sativex by the National Health Service, with a cost in-excess of £150 for a single bottle of GW Pharmaceuticals patented spray — as-compared to the oil shown to the crowd, with a manufacturing cost of approximately £10.

Similar ‘420’ pro-cannabis events were held globally.

Alleged Russian spy captured in Montreal, Canada

Thursday, November 16, 2006

An alleged Russian spy was arrested in Montreal, having threatened national security. The man is identified as a Russian spy and has been living under a false name.

As he prepared to board a plane out of Canada, Canada Border Services agents took the man into custody at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal on Tuesday. Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day and Immigration Minister Monte Solberg signed the document that authorized the man’s arrest.

This document is called the national security certificate and is rarely used. The certificate alerts Ottawa about possible threats to the country. The ministers of immigration and public safety are obliged to sign the national security certificate.

“The government’s most important duty is to ensure the security of all Canadians. A security certificate has been issued … against a foreign national. He is now in custody in Montreal,” said Melissa Leclerc, spokeswoman for Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day. “A foreign national alleging to be a Canadian citizen named Paul William Hampel was arrested in Montreal after a national security certificate under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act was issued against him.”

The man came to Canada several years ago with the name of Paul William Hampel, and is now reported to be false. Officials at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) are working on identifying the man who entered Canada years ago.

“He is now in custody in Montreal. This is not a counter-terrorism case. More information will become available as the Federal Court process unfolds. Any speculation about the individual’s other nationality is premature at this point,” Barbara Campion, a spokesperson for CSIS.

Ottawa believed the man had been “engaging in an act of espionage or an act of subversion,” and “belonged to an organization that there are reasonable grounds to believe engages.”

“I don’t think we’re going to get the most intimate of details, no, not at all,” he told CTV Montreal….We’ll see a public version of the allegations that will be released by the federal court judge who is going to be responsible for reviewing the basis upon which cabinet will have declared this individual subject to a security certificate. beyond that, though, we may see things settle more quietly between governments,” said David Harris, former chief of strategic planning at CSIS.

“There are also influence operations where countries might try to influence their expatriates and émigré communities in Canada. Beyond that, there is a real appetite building among many countries for technological secrets,” he said. “They can be of use to industries of the sponsoring nations and these things can have values in the billions for the economies of those countries undertaking these operations.”

Reports say the man’s methods in Canada matched the techniques used by the Russian intelligence agency’s Directorate S, which runs the Russian spy network.

Twenty people since 1991 have been charged under the Security Certificate legislation in Canada. The last time it was used was in 2003.

The court hearing for the man being held in Montreal will be on Wednesday. It is still unclear if the hearing will be in Ottawa, the nations capital, or in Montreal.

More information will be released as the case progresses.

How To Get Cheap Liability Insurance In Texas

By Jim Bassett

If you are a resident of the lone star state you may be interested to learn about how to get cheap liability insurance in Texas. With the cost of gasoline rising month on month, and other living expenses also increasing, saving money on vehicle coverage has never been so important. Thankfully, there are a number of tips and tricks you can use to bring down this necessary expense.

Liability insurance is always the cheapest type of insurance, irregardless of which state you live in. This coverage only protects other road users against financial losses caused as a result of your driving, it should be noted that your insurer would not pay out to offset damage caused to your own self or vehicle.

When checking out which insurers offer the best deals, there are two types of providers you should be focusing on. Today, the best deals are usually to be had from those insurers operating online, as well as niche oriented companies.

An online business typically has less overheads than a company that operates a string of offices. As they have fewer running costs, they can usually pass on attractive savings and discounts to customers. If you are to use an online insurer, it is important that you make the effort to check out reviews of the firms you have shortlisted. Not all net based insurers have a good reputation, only choose a name that has received good reviews and which has been in business for a number of years.

Niche companies typically only cater to individuals who belong to a specific demographic group. If you are a newly qualified driver, or over the age of seventy, it is certainly worth checking out what deals are available from those firms that are focused on providing policies to people like yourself.

If you have been prosecuted for a driving related misdemeanor, you may find it much harder finding a cheap policy. In such a situation, one of the best strategies to adopt would be to enroll for an advanced drivers training course. Such programs can prove to insurers that you have learned from your mistake and are not a great risk when sat behind the wheel of your vehicle.

Another way of bringing down the cost of your next policy would be to use your vehicle less. Though you may initially shirk at this idea, just take a moment to think about how much money you could actually save. To drive less does not necessarily involve cutting back on the journeys made, it would require organizing your trips in a more constructive manner. For example, you could do your weekly shopping on the way home from work as opposed to at a separate time.

Cheap liability insurance in Texas is available. As long as you do not rush into signing up for a new policy, and make the effort to explore as many options as possible, you should be able to choose a plan that does not leave you short of cash.

Australian man to be executed in Singapore

Saturday, November 19, 2005

Supporters of convicted Australian drug trafficker, Van Nguyen, gathered outside the State Library in Melbourne yesterday to display thousands of messages of opposition to his death sentence.

Callers to talkback radio in Melbourne were overwhelmingly against the death penalty of Nguyen, who immediately admitted his guilt and has cooperated with authorities since being caught smuggling heroin into Singapore. Many called for a boycott of Singaporean products.

25-year-old Nguyen was arrested at Changi Airport in 2002 for carrying heroin and sentenced to death in March. Nguyen claims he carried the 396 grams of heroin strapped to his body in an attempt to pay off his brother Khoa’s $30,000 legal debts.

The Singapore government have announced they will execute Nguyen at dawn on December 2nd. Singapore President S. R. Nathan rejected Nguyen’s clemency four weeks ago. The Melbourne salesman was sentenced to death under Singapore law which determines a mandatory death sentence for anyone found guilty of possessing 15 grams of heroin or more.

Nguyen’s mother was informed on Thursday by registered mail from the Singapore prisons service of the execution date. The letter stated that she should start making funeral arrangements. She will get to see her son in the three days leading up to the execution.

Despite repeated pleas for clemency from many thousands of supporters; religious groups; human rights organisations; the Pope; and the Australian Government – including Prime Minister, John Howard – Singapore officials have said Nguyen’s execution is irreversible.

Mr Howard had argued that Nguyen should be spared, citing mitigating circumstances in his case which pointed to the fact that he was not a serial drug trafficker but had merely been trying to pay off his brother’s debts.

The Victorian Attorney-General, Rob Hulls, says the Singaporean Government has shown no compassion whatsoever in its treatment of Van Nguyen and his family.

“What’s happening is brutal, is inappropriate. I, and the Victorian Government, vehemently oppose the death penalty in any circumstances”, he told ABC Radio. “This is a young kid who has assisted the police all the way… In any other country, he would get a discount in relation to the penalty. But because there is a mandatory death penalty for drug offences in Singapore, this young man may well be executed. It is just grossly inappropriate.”

“Singapore maintains that capital punishment is a criminal justice issue; it is the sovereign right of every country to decide whether or not to include capital punishment within its criminal justice system,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

Singapore argues that there was no international consensus that capital punishment should be abolished. At the most recent meeting of the UN Commission on Human Rights, 66 countries dissociated themselves from a resolution calling for the abolition of capital punishment.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong affirmed Singapore’s position by saying that it has to “stand firm on drugs to protect its citizens from the scourge and to ensure the country does not become a conduit for the trafficking of illicit drugs.”

In reply to a letter appealing for clemency from his Australian counterpart Alexander Downer, Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo said: “Mr Nguyen imported almost 400gm of pure heroin which would have supplied more than 26,000 doses to drug addicts.”

No one will be permitted to see Nguyen on the morning of his execution. His body will be released to his mother.

Go Eco Friendly To Save Earth

Submitted by: John Alden

We have heard a lot many times that the man is the social animal. Very true, but then it becomes the duty of the very same man to save its surrounding social world or nature or the planet earth. When we talk about saving the environment or planet earth the very first thing that comes to our mind is the pollution and the very most common and widely spread pollution found around is the plastic pollution.

Plastic bags or any plastic products are the most widely used by the common man. Starting from morning to the night, plastic bags make its presence felt many times. But, the question comes in our mind that why plastic products are so famous? Plastic bags are flexible having great carrying capacity, resistant and can be easily stored or packed. It has become the necessity of every human being. However, we should not miss out the fact that it is the main cause for the pollution. Plastics are non biodegradable substance. It does not degrade and remains as it is for much long time. It not only makes it toxic the soil but also makes it barren. Many animals die every year due to accidental intake of plastic. Cases of children dieing due to plastic bags are also reported. Recently, plastic pollution became the major issue on the banks of holly river Ganga and many pilgrimage places also. However, now the government has made strict rules in order to reduce its pollution. People are made realized and restrict them from using plastic products.

Nowadays, substitutions of plastic bags are also available and the most widely accepted one is the paper bags. Paper bags were firstly invented in China for storing and carrying medicines which then became famous in U.S, France, Germany and other countries. Nowadays, it is used commercially as well as socially. Paper bags are not only light in weight but also flexible and most importantly eco friendly. Such paper bags are also being processed to make them resistant and increase their carrying capacity. Paper bags are used widely in carrying vegetables or fruits, medicines and also chemicals. Also those chemicals which were found to be reactive towards the plastic were easily packed and carried in the paper bags. Paper bags are not only inert but also harmless in every sense. Not only the paper bags recycle bags, PVC bags and many eco friendly products are gaining attention of the people. Turner Broadcasting apologizes for Boston scare

Friday, February 2, 2007

An advertising campaign for shows on Adult Swim, a programming block on Cartoon Network, which is owned by Turner Broadcasting, gave local and federal law-enforcement a scare when devices were discovered on eight different bridges and roads.

The U.S. city of Boston was snarled in traffic jams January 31 as police investigated devices with flashing lights representing a cartoon character were placed around bridges and other areas throughout the city.

Different governmental agencies were brought in to help deal with the problem, which was later found to be no threat, as described by Boston Police Department spokesperson Eddy Chrispin. A bomb squad was deployed under supervision of the FBI, Boston police, the US Coast Guard, and different federal agencies.

The advertising campaign, for the widely popular program Aqua Teen Hunger Force, featuring characters from that series, was in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and many other major US cities.

Two people have been arrested for alleged participation in this incident.

Turner Broadcasting Systems hired New York marketing firm Interference Inc. which in turn hired individuals in the various cities to place the devices promoting the cartoon’s fifth season, scheduled for a February 23 premiere. Road and rail traffic was disrupted by police as they investigated and removed the devices.

The mostly flat devices resemble two-foot-square Lite-Brites with batteries attached to the bottom and visible wires.

G4TV has dubbed the incident “Aquagate” on its broadcast of Attack of the Show segment The Feed.

It is not known why the devices took police several weeks to notice, nor why the devices were believed to be dangerous.
